The path of least resistance |

This article fits under the heading of a trick or secret. Mongo discovered this method for getting the deer to walk in range of his stand by accident. One time, Mongo set up a stand on the edge of a small marsh that had lots of intersecting tracks. The only problem was getting through thick cover to the stand. So Mongo cut a path to his stand and inadvertently created the path of least resistance. After the path was cut, deer soon started using the path and then would walk right up behind Mongo; making the stand worthless but creating a dim bulb in Mongo's king-sized noggin. Mongo had heard of deer taking the easiest way around obstacles. He knew a funnel directed deer movement. What if Mongo used this path as a home made funnel? So this year a stand was placed at the trail I cut after a little modification. The trail was extended to intersect with two other deer trails and to curve around the perfect tree for a nice broadside shot. Tard owes his first deer to this path. Mongo passed on a four pointer from this spot and one of Mongo's buddies (the now infamous Barney) missed a six pointer from this spot. That makes it a hot spot! Ah yes, the path of least resistance...deer are lazy and will go around instead of over or through. They can be directed as in this case to go past your stand that has been set up to take advantage of cover, prevailing winds, the rising or setting sun (you know like pilots who dive at their enemies out of the sun), local height advantages, or anything else that might increase your odds. Also the deer can be brought by your location at the perfect distance (10-15 yards, not too close - not too far... just right) and broadside for that sweet sound of the killer crack of breaking ribs. So get some clippers and start cutting down sticker bushes and saplings. Use a rake to clear dead branches. Make several paths based on your knowledge of feeding, bedding, and transition areas that intersect at a great ambush spot and then set up a few stands in the area to be ready for a variety of wind directions. Our original path of least resistance stand can be hunted with the wind coming from three directions. Now we fight over who gets that stand. One thing to remember though - Make your path skinny. It's for deer who like to feel cozy and protected. A big wide trail will invite them to roam off and ruin all your nefarious plans. Remember - you own the heard! Direct it like the master predator that you are! |
